CHALLENGING BLACK AND WHITE THINKING IN AGRICULTURE
You know the kind...the terminal sires that throw big calves that you have to pull and the maternal ones that produce massive cows that need constant supplementary feeding to maintain condition over winter.
Genetics is where I started out in my career, and let me tell you, my perspective has changed massively since then.
"We need big arses to top the market" - that's what I was brought up on and worked with for years. But it's simply not the case anymore. An R4L will suit the vast majority of our market in the UK and in chasing those 'big arses' we've totally forgotten what a suckler cow is there to do...
So when I met Arron Nerbas, of Nerbas Bros Angus (NBA) in Canada, in 2023, I was very, very curious. NBA are a 100% forage-based system, grazing grass in the summer and bale grazing with hay through the winter (whilst the ground is frozen 8 feet below and with god knows how much snow). Their cows never see a shed.
They have 500 head of Aberdeen Angus Cattle and sell bulls across Canada and America. Through years of careful genetic planning, system pressure and epigenetics, their cow herd are like peas in a pod - Smaller (600 kg ish) cows that are resilient, fertile, functional and require no fuss at all.
Arron and I have become good friends and host a podcast together. Fast forward 2 years or so and NBA have been through the arduous process of getting a bull collected for export to the UK, and I'm the UK contact - so shout if you want to order some straws or need any more information.
